Legend Associated with Narmada Jayanti
As per legends, once Lord Shankar meditated on Maikal Parvat and some sweat dropped on it. Then, the Parvat took the shape of a pond and a beautiful girl appeared from it. She was named as Narmada and then, Narmada started flowing as a river at the behest of Lord Shankar. The ripples sounded like Maikal, so it was also named as Maikalsuta.
There is a mention of Narmada river in Skanda Purana that it flows steadily and calmly even in the natural calamities. In addition to this, it is cited in Matsya Purana about this river that one gets rid of all sins just by having a glimpse of it. It is as pious as Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda. As per religious beliefs, every stone of Narmada river is considered to be a form of Lord Shankar. Besides this, out of 12 Jyotirlingas, there is one Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga established at the banks of Narmada river. This is one of the rivers which is worth worshipping in the form of Parikrama.
Legend of Maa Narmada
Although all the deities killed the demon named Andhakasur, some of them became sinners. In this context, all the deities went to Lord Shiva with Brahma Ji and Vishnu Ji and at that time, Lord Shiva was absorbed in meditation. After reaching there, they told Lord Shiva that some sins were committed by them while killing the demon and requested him for emancipation from those sins. On the request of the deities, Lord Shiva opened his eyes and fixed them on a particular point on Maikal Parvat.
A beautiful girl appeared from this very point and then, she was named as Narmada by Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Narmada river was created to wash away all the sins.
