As per Shastras, the festival of Narasimha Dwadashi is celebrated on the day of Dwadashi of Shukla Paksha in Phalguna month. This year, it is going to be celebrated on March 25, 2021 i.e. Thursday.
There is a mention about this Dwadashi in Vedas and Puranas. It is believed that he was one of the 12 incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Half of his body is of a human while the rest is of a lion. Lord Vishnu incarnated himself as Lord Narasimha and saved his supreme devotee, Prahlada, by killing king Hirankashyap.

- It is believed that the above-cited Mantra is helpful in getting rid of all kinds of sorrows and pains of life. Also, Lord Narasimha blesses the observer of this fast to protect them like Prahlada.

In ancient times, there was a Rishi named Kashyapa. He had a wife named Diti and had two sons, Hariyanksha and Hiranyakashyap. Although they were the sons of Rishi, they had the tendency like that of demons. In this pretext, Lord Vishnu incarnated himself as Varaha and killed Hariyanaksha to protect the earth. Then, Hiranyakashyap got furious at his brother’s demise and resolved to take revenge for his brother’s death and be victorious. After this, he pleased Brahma Ji with deep meditation and received a boon for the fulfillment of his desire. Further, he captured heaven by defeating deities and established his rule and thus, he became the lord of all the three worlds and started considering himself as god and became arrogant.

The atrocities and tortures of Hiranyakashyap kept on growing and his wife, Kayadhu, gave birth to a child named Parahalad, who was religious by nature and had a strong faith in devotion of Lord Vishnu. When he grew up, his father asked Prahalad to worship him but he did not agree with him and started speaking against his father’s wrongdoings. Also, his father tried everything possible to digress his son’s attention from worshipping Lord Vishnu. He also tried to kill him by pushing him from high mountains and burning him alive with the help of his sister. However, all the attempts went in vain owing to the influence of Lord Vishnu.

In the above-cited pretext, the subjects of Hiranyakashyap became the devotees of Lord Vishnu and started venerating him. Then, Hiranyakashyap’s anger crossed all limits and he decided to give death penalty to Prahalad in the presence of everyone. After this, he tied Prahlada with a pillar in a royal court and asked him to remember his god to save him.
