Mohini Ekadashi: Mythology

In ancient times, there was a town named Bhadravathi near Sarasvati River. There was a rich man named Dhanpal living in this city. He was a philanthropist and social helper. He constructed many restaurants, wells, lakes, and Dharamshalas in the city. Also, he planted many shady trees like Mango, Jamun, Neem etcetera at the roadside for the people. He had five sons, among them the youngest son’s name was Dhrishta Budhi. He had bad habits and bad company. He was into drinking, smoking, gambling, and consuming meat. This really upset Dhanpal so he kicked him out of his home, still he didn’t learn a lesson.

To pursue his bad habits, he sold all his jewelry and clothes, and when he was left with nothing, even his friends didn’t support him and left him alone. Then he tried stealing but he was caught red handed. For the crime of theft,  he was presented before the king, but as he was Dharmpal’s son, he was warned and released.  For his livelihood, he was left with the only option i.e. stealing so he tried to steal and was caught once again while committing this crime. This time, the kind announced him imprisonment, where he was tortured to teach him a lesson and expelled from the city.

After that, he went to a jungle and started hunting animals to fill his empty stomach. One day in the search of his prey, he reached Maharishi Gondaliya Asharam. That time Kondaliya Rishi was returning from bathing in Ganga. Then Dhrishta Budhi reached Maharishi and said with folded hands that “O Rishi! Please pity me and tell me a remedy which would help me to get rid of all my sorrows. Then Maharishi Kondaliya asked him to observe Mohini Ekadashi fast with complete faith and loyalty to end all his sorrows. He adhered to Maharishi’s advice and he observed fast after following the told rituals and method. After a few days, all his sins washed away and after getting this divine body he went to Baikunth.
