Kartigai Deepam : Vrat Katha
Lord Shiva appeared to Lord Vishnu as an infinite beam of light before Lord Brahma. The reason behind this incarnation of Lord Shiva was to decide who is the supreme one amongst Gods. Both Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma sparked a debate as to who is the best among them. In such a situation, Lord Shiva told both the gods that you have to find the beginning and end of this infinite flame. This basically meant that they had to find the head of Lord Shiva and his feet.
Both the Gods went out for this particular search. But Lord Vishnu returned very soon he confessed to Lord Shiva that there is no end to Lord Shiva. After this Lord Brahma came and he said that he somehow got to see the head of Lord Shiva. But what he uttered turned out to be a complete lie. During that very moment, a furious Lord Shiva cursed him that no temple of Lord Brahma would ever be built on earth and he will not be worshiped in any form. Thus, at the end, Lord Vishnu proved to be superior to Lord Brahma. Ever since then, Lord Shiva is worshiped duly on the occasion of Masik Kartighai Deepam.
