Significance of Maha Shivratri & Pradosh Vrat

The festival of Maha Shivratri marks the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to the legends, after the death of Goddess Sati, Lord Shiva had gone into a deep state of meditation for ages. Goddess Parvati had endured rigorous devotion and penance in order to win Shiva as her husband. Hence, as a result of her severe penance, on the fourteenth day in the month of Phalguna, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married.
