The Significance Of Dev Diwali 2022
In Hinduism, there is a special importance for every Purnima tithi in the entire year and there is always at least one festival every Purnima tithi. It is believed that lighting a lamp on this day gives peace to the souls of our ancestors. This is the reason people usually offer their respect and prayers to their ancestors on Purnima. If we talk about the scriptures, on the day of Kartik Purnima, that is, Dev Diwali, bathing in the Ganges river provides blessings from Lord Vishnu in the form of Salvation.
In terms of religious significance, on Dev Diwali, Lord Shiva took his Ardhanarishvara avatar and annihilated a monster named Tripurasura and released the Gods from his abuse and atrocities. Later, in heaven, all of the Gods came together and celebrated Diwali by lighting diyas.
It is said that on Dev Diwali, all the Gods arrive at Banaras, or popularly known as Kaashi. This is the reason why there is a tradition of Deepdaan at the ghats of Banaras. The entire month of Kartik Purnima is considered very auspicious and beneficial since Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Mahesh, Lord Angira, etc., gave certification to the Mahapunit Festivals this month.
According to other religious beliefs, Lord Brahma descended in the Pushkar District of the Pushkar Sarovar, Rajasthan. Since then, on the day of a carnival called the Suprasidha Pushkar Mela that starts on Dev utthani Ekadashi and ends on Kartik Purnima. Devotees from all around the world arrive at the carnival organized to pay respect to the Lord Brahma and visit his temple. It is believed that bathing in the Pushkar Sarovar on the day of Kartik Purnima helps them get rid of their sins and bless them with auspicious results.
The Dev Diwali Vrat Katha
According to the mythological stories, there was a demon named Tarkasura who had three sons– Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali (Tripura). When Lord Shiva’s son Lord Kartikeya killed Tarkasura, his three sons started severe penance to take revenge. Having been impressed by their severe penance, Lord Brahma asked them to ask for a gift or a vardaan or boon, and they asked to be immortal. Lord Brahma knew that blessing them with this boon will give them an opportunity to misuse the power of being immortal. Hence, he refused to bless them with this power.
Lord Brahma told them to ask for any other boon. To this, the three brothers asked him to name a place after them, and whenever someone tries to kill one of them then only one weapon shall end all three of them together. On hearing this, Lord Brahma said “Tathastu!”
After getting the blessing from Lord Brahma, Tarkasura’s sons captured the three worlds and started abusing the Gods. After getting tired of the atrocities of these three brothers, the Gods went to Lord Shiva to request him to kill them. Lord Shiva asked Vishwakarma Ji to build a chariot for him and rode it to go for the annihilation of the three sons of Tarakasura. There was a terrible war between the Gods and the demons. During the war, the three brothers stood in a line, that is when Lord Shiva killed all three of them with one arrow. It is believed that since then Lord Shiva is known as Tripurari. Being delighted to be freed from the abuse of the three monsters, the Gods celebrated Dev Diwali.
