Lord Krishna Known by Various Names in the Different States
Though Lord Krishna has many names, there are some names which are very popular and are known by those names in different states. In Uttar Pradesh, Lord Sri Krishna is known by the names of Brajwasi, Madhav, Nand Gopal, Banke Bihari, Vasudev, Govind and Gopi, while in Rajasthan he is referred to as “Shri Nathji” and “Thakur Ji”. Janmashtami Fast and Puja Vidhi
The Janmashtami fast is commemorated by various people according to their devotion and wishes. Some people observe a fast on the day before Janmashtami, while most people observe fast on the day of Janmashtami by observing fast on Ashtami Tithi and observing the ParnaNavami Tithi. Both men and women can keep this fast.
- The person who observes the Janmashtami fast should eat satvik food a day before the fast i.e. on Saptami.
- Take a bath on Ashtami i.e. on a fasting day in the morning. Thenceforth, eulogize all the Gods and Goddesses and sit facing the east or north direction.
- Now take an oath to fast by taking water and flowers etc. in your hands and worship Bal Gopal by adhering to all the rites and rituals.
- In the afternoon, mix black sesame seeds with water and take a bath again. Now make a maternity home for Devaki ji. Put a beautiful bed in this thread house and install an urn on it.
- Now duly worship Devaki, Vasudev, Baldev, Nand, Yashoda and Lakshmi Ji.
- Take a bath back before 12 o’clock at night. Now put a red cloth on a pedestal and install a statue or picture of Lord Krishna on it.
- After bathing Krishna’s idol with Panchamrit and Gangajal, make him wear new clothes.
- Offer incense sticks, lamp, Roli to Bal Gopal and apply Tilak of Akshat and offer Makhan-Mishri to the Lord. Do not forget to use Gangajal and Tulsi leaves while worshipping. Seek the blessings of Bal Gopal after worshipping him methodically.
- People observing a fast should break it only after twelve o’clock in the night. (Grains should not be consumed during this fast. You can eat fruits or else make a Kuttu or water chestnut flour pudding.)

Lord Krishna Worshipped Three Times a Day
The festival of Janmashtami, which lasts for two days and during this, some people fast before the birth of Krishna takes place, while some others observe the fast on the day of Krishna’s birth and open the fast after birth takes place at night.

- First Puja

Do not pose threats to any kind of trees and plants on this special day. Help the poor and needy people as much as you can. Go to a Radha-Krishna temple on this day and pay a visit to the Lord. If possible, organize kirtan at your home or at the temple. Lord Krishna loved the feathers of peacocks (Morpankh), so while worshipping the Lord on the occasion of Janmashtami, keep one feather near the idol or picture of Krishna at the place of worship. A wooden flute must also be kept near the idol of Krishna ji.
