Karwa Chauth This Year

The festival of Karva Chauth falls every year, on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of Krishna Paksha of Karthik month. This day is celebrated with much pomp and show in North India, and this year it will fall on 04 November, Wednesday. Married women fast on this day, not even drinking drop of water until they offer water to the Moon, and pray for the longevity, success, and progress for their husbands. However, unmarried women also fast on this day – some for their soon-to-be-husbands, their fiance, while others fast in hopes of finding their desired husband.

Karva Chauth Fasting Rituals For Unmarried Women

Although unmarried women do not need to follow the strict rules of Karva Chauth like the married ones; yet there are specific regulations they should keep in mind while fasting. These include:

  • Unwedded girls should not do a Nirajala fast, i.e., fasting without water, as the married women do. Instead, they should ensure that they do not eat anything throughout the day, and observe a Nirahar fast, i.e., fasting without food.
  • Henna has a special significance on Karva Chauth. Unmarried girls should especially apply henna on the hands of a married woman. Doing so gets them their desired partner soon.
  • On the day of Karva Chauth, dressing up like the married women is prohibited for unwedded girls. On the contrary, while fasting, they should wear new clothes and stay without any makeup, simplistically.
  • One should diligently worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the day of Karva Chauth in the morning. While in the evening they should participate in the Karva Pujan with all the married women of their society.
  • Those girls whose marriage has not been fixed yet should offer water (arghya) to the pole star instead of the Moon.

  • On the other hand, those whose marriage has been arranged and are fasting for their to-be-husbands should offer arghya to the Moon while watching their future husband or his picture. Video calling has become another standard mode of communication between partners while opening the Karva Chauth fast.
  • Unmarried girls should especially offer sweet dishes as Bhoga to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, and they should open their fasts with this very bhoga.
  • Sargi is the food that mothers-in-law give their daughters-in-law to eat before sunrise so that the latter are fortified for the strict fasting ahead. However, as the Sargi cannot be given to unmarried women, hence, they too should not give things of Suhaag (signs of being married) to anyone.
  • Unlike the married women, unwedded girls should not use a sieve to look at the stars while offering Arghya and opening their fast.
