Karva Chauth Mythology

According to mythology, there was a moneylender in ancient times. He had seven sons and a daughter named Karva. Once the fast of Karva Chauth was kept in the house of the moneylender, then in the evening when everyone sat down to eat, Karva’s brothers then asked her to have the meal. On this, Karva refused and said that there is no moonrise yet and she will take food only after offering arghya to the moon. Karva had observed a nirjala fast and her brothers did not tolerate this condition of her, so the youngest brother lit a diya on the peepal tree far away and lit it in such a way that Karva could not understand whether it was the moon or the lamp. Unknowingly, mistaking the diya as the moon, she broke her fast and consumed the first bite of the meal. As soon as Karva ate the food, her husband died. Full of grief, Karva sat with her husband’s dead body for a year and collected the fodder and the grass that grew on it. When the Chaturthi tithi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month came the next year, then she observed Karva Chauth fast with full rituals. This gave life to her husband.

Karva Chauth 2022: Pujan Vidhi

1. Wake up early in the morning in Brahma Muhurta and take a bath.
2. After this, clean your house of worship and take a meal given by your mother-in-law.
3. Then worship god with a sincere heart and take a vow.
4. Then in the evening place the idol/photo of the Gods on the earthen altar. Also keep 10-13 karvas (Karva Chauth Kalash).
5. After this, prepare the material for puja, in which there should be incense, diya, sandalwood, roli, vermilion, etc. Also, there should be enough ghee in the diya so that it keeps burning for the entire time.
6. Start your puja an hour before the moonrise.
7. If there are many women in your house then try that all of you should start the puja together.
8. Listen or recite the Karva Chauth fasting story (Katha) at the time of puja.
9. After the moonrise, see the moon through a sieve or strainer and offer arghya.

Rules For Observing Karva Chauth Fast 

• This fast is to be observed from before sunrise to moonrise.
• This fast should be broken only after moon sighting.
• The entire family of Lord Shiva i.e. Lord Shiva, Maa Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya should be worshiped 1 hour before the moon rises.
• At the time of puja, the face of the gods should be facing towards the west and the woman observing the fast should face the east.
• Water should not be consumed during this fast.
