Jyeshtha Purnima Fast Mythology
According to the mythology, a daughter was born to King Aswapati in ancient times, who was named Savitri. When Savitri grew up, the kin started to search for a suitable groom for her but he failed to succeed in his endeavor. So, he asked his daughter to look for a suitable groom by herself. To obey her father’s orders, she set out to find a groom for herself. Then one day, she saw Satyavan and she decided to choose him as her groom. When Devrishi Narad came to know about this, he told Savitri that Satyavan’s age was quite young, so she must find another groom. On this, Savitri said that she is a Hindu female and she would only choose a groom once. Everyone agreed with her and one fine they, they both got married.
One day, Satyavan started to have a severe headache. Then Savitri placed her husband’s head in her lap and made him lie upside down. She then swa Yamraj take Satyavan’s soul towards south. Seeing this, Savitri started following him. Yamraj told her that a wife can accompany the husband only till Earth, so she must return back. Savitri told him that she will live where her husband lives as this is her duty. This made Yamraj happy and he granted three wishes to Savitri. Then Savitri asked Yamraj for three boons respectively. First- her father-in-law and mother-in-law’s eyesight should come back. Second- her father-in-law should get his lost kingdom back. Third- she asked that she should get the privilege of becoming the mother of sons of her husband Satyavan. Yamraj granted all three boons to her. But the problem was that it was impossible to bear a child without the presence of Satyavan. Therefore, Yamraj had to return the life of Satyavan. After that Savitri went back to the same banyan tree where her husband’s body was kept. With the effect of the boon, Satyavan became alive, the eyesight of the mother and father-in-law came back and her father-in-law got his kingdom. Since then, the Banyan tree is worshiped on Jyeshtha Purnima and Vat Savitri Vrat. It is believed that by observing Jyeshtha Purnima fast, all the wishes of women are fulfilled.
