July Month Significance In A Religious View

We all know that July signifies the start of the rainy season. The beautiful weather and greenery add to the attractiveness of nature during this time. However, July 2023 has unique religious significance, and this month has a special place in Sanatan Dharma since several fasts and festivals are celebrated one after the other in this month, such as Guru Purnima, Kark Sankranti, Padmini, Ekadashi, and so on.

However, let us remind you that the month of July begins in the month of Ashadh and ends in the month of Shravan, according to the Hindu calendar. In Sanatan Dharma, these two months hold unique status. In terms of the calendar, the month of Ashadha is the fourth month of the Hindu New Year, which relates to June and July in the English calendar. The rainy season begins at the start of this month.

This month falls after Jyestha and before Shravan. The Purvashada and Uttarashada Nakshatras are named after this month. This month is especially significant religiously since festivals such as Jagannath Rath Yatra, Yogini Ekadashi, Ashada Amavasya, and Navratri are held during this month. This month began on June 5, 2023, and will end on July 3, 2023.

Sawan In July 2023: A Dear Month To Lord Shiva

Throughout the year, Lord Shiva followers look forward to the month of Sawan because it is the favorite month of Mahadev, the God of Gods. The month of Sawan is seen to be the greatest for Lord Shiva worship, with worshippers frequently anointing the Shivling in Sawan and fasting on every Monday that falls in Sawan. Shivshankar grants his every demand.

However, the year 2023 will be quite exceptional in many respects since you will have two entire months to honor Lord Shiva. In other words, the month of Sawan will begin on July 4, 2023 and end on August 31, 2023, giving Bholeshankar devotees 59 days instead of just 30. In addition, the number of Sawan Monday fasts falling in Sawan will be 8, and devotees will be able to observe 8 Sawan Monday fasts to obtain Lord Shiva’s blessings. Let us inform you that the cause for the two months of Sawan this time is Adhikamas. This year is Adhikamas, according to Vikram Samvat 2080.

If you’re wondering how this is possible, consider that the lunar year is 354 days long and the solar year is 365 days long, according to the Vedic calendar. There is an 11-day difference between these two, and this disparity increases to 33 days every three years. Similarly, every third year, a separate additional month of 33 days is generated, known as Adhikamas, and as a result, Sawan will have two months in 2023. Let’s have a look at the dates of Sawan Mondays in the year 2023.

Religious Significance Of Fast And Festivals In July 2023

Pradosh Vrat (Shukla) (1 July, 2023): Pradosh Vrat is a Hindu festival that is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi of each month, according to the Panchang. Pradosh fast comes twice a month, and the Monday fast is known as Som Pradosh. Similarly, the Pradosh Vrat is known as Bhaum Pradosh if it falls on a Tuesday, and Shani Pradosh if it happens on a Saturday. Because Pradosh Vrat falls on a Saturday in July, it will be known as Shani Pradosh Vrat. However, this fast is devoted to Lord Shiva.

Guru Purnima (3 July, 2023): Every year, the festival of Guru Purnima, which represents the Guru-shishya parampara, is celebrated with considerable lavishness. Guru Purnima is a Hindu festival held every year on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashadha. It is stated that Maharishi Ved Vyas, the author of the Vedas and the Mahabharata, was born on this day, therefore it is also known as Vyas Jayanti. In addition, five of Vyasa’s pupils initiated the tradition of worshiping Guru on the occasion of Guru Purnima. Aside from that, the full Moon in the month of Ashadha is also known as Ashadha Purnima.

Sankashti Chaturthi (6 July, 2023): Every month, the Sankashti Chaturthi fast is held on the Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna and Shukla Paksha. It is a belief associated with the fast of Sankashti Chaturthi that any devotee who observes this fast with a true heart, Ganesh, as the remover of obstacles, eliminates all the problems and troubles arising in his life; thus, worshiping Lord Ganesha on Sankashti Chaturthi with complete regulations and guidelines proves to be fruitful.

Kamika Ekadashi (13 July, 2023): Kamika Ekadashi, also known as Pavitra Ekadashi, is one of the 24 Ekadashis that occur in a year. This Ekadashi, which falls in the month of Sawan, is special in several respects. The fast of Ekadashi is practiced to seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings and kindness. All of a person’s sins are said to be erased if he fasts with dedication on Kamika Ekadashi. Along with this, Lord Vishnu, the world’s protector, bestows his blessings.

Masik Shivratri (15 July, 2023): The monthly Shivratri fast is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Shivratri, i.e. Krishna Paksha, every month. Shivratri, which occurs 12 times a year, has a unique position in Sanatan Dharma. According to mythical beliefs, the monthly Shivratri fast is kept, and worship to Lord Shiva is performed to remove difficulties and impediments in life, as well as to fulfill wishes, so that worshippers may receive Lord Shankar’s blessings.

Karka Sankranti (16 July, 2023): Along with Hinduism, the Sun has a specific role in Vedic astrology, and it occasionally transits from one zodiac sign to another. When the Sun changes signs, the event is known as Sankranti, and on July 16, 2023, the Sun God will enter Cancer from Gemini, so the celebration will be known as Kark Sankranti. However, because the Sun changes signs 12 times every year, there are 12 Sankrantis in a year. The Sun transit period is considered fortunate for charitable and religious actions.

Shravan Amavasya (17 July, 2023): Amavasya Tithi, which occurs once a month, is considered special in Hinduism. According to religious traditions, Pitridev is the lord of Amavasya Tithi, which is why works such as peace and ancestor oblation are performed on Amavasya Tithi. In this sequence, the new Moon of the month of Savan is known as Hariyali Amavasya, and it is auspicious to plant trees on this occasion since it removes troubles from the person’s life.

Padmini Ekadashi (29 July 2023): Padmini Ekadashi is the Ekadashi that falls in the month of Adhikamas or Malamas. Purushottami and Kamala Ekadashi are other names for this Ekadashi. This Ekadashi is considered the most unique because it does not occur every month like the other Ekadashis, but only once every three years, hence fasting on this Ekadashi provides the devotee with the same virtue as all the Ekadashi fasts throughout the year. This Ekadashi is also devoted to Lord Vishnu.
