Beginning Of Jivitputrika Vrat 2024

Ashwatthama got extremely angry after the demise of his father during the Mahabharata war. In anger he walked into the camp of Pandavas. Five people were sleeping inside the camp at the time. Assuming that they were Pandavas, Ashwatthama killed all five of them in order to take revenge for the death of his father. But in actuality, they were Draupadi’s five children. When Arjun got the news of this, he captured Ashwatthama and snatched his divine gem.

Now Ashwatthama got even more angry and in order to take revenge he killed the child growing in the womb of Abhimanyu’s wife Uttara. But then Lord Krishna, seeing the fruits of all his virtues in the unborn child of Uttara, brought him back to life. Due to his rebirth after death, the child was named Jivitputrika.

It is believed that the tradition of fasting on Jitiya began at this time in order to hope for the long life and well-being of children.

Another legend associated with this day claims that a female fox and an eagle used to live in the Himalayan jungle near to the Narmada River. One day both of them saw some women worshiping and fasting and wanted to do the same themselves. The fox became extremely hungry during the fast and secretly started eating the dead animal.

The eagle, on the other hand, observed this fast with constant dedication and completed it. They were both born as humans in the next life. However on one side the eagle had many sons, all of them lived, whereas on the other side the fox had many sons but they died as soon as they were born. With this feeling of revenge, she attempted to kill the eaglet multiple times but she could not succeed.

Subsequently, the eagle told the fox about Jitiya’s fast from his previous birth. By observing this fast the fox also attained the happiness of having children in this life. In this sense, the happiness of having a child is what makes this fast extremely well-known around the world.

Jivitputrika Vrat 2024 Do’s And Don’ts

The fast of Jitiya is observed by having a bath the day before, just like the fast of Chhath. Generally speaking, one should avoid eating anything that has garlic, onions, vegetarianism, or tamasic flavors on the day of bathing. This is because the fasting individual consumes food after bathing and worship and observes  a waterless fast the next day.

Apart from this, those who have started observing Jitiya fast once, they have to observe it every year. This fast must not be left midway.

It is believed that first the mother-in-law observes this fast and then the daughter-in-law of the house observes this fast.

Following celibacy is crucial during the Jitiya fast, just like it is with other fasts.

Furthermore, it is advisable to avoid getting into arguments and to not be resentful of anyone during this time.

Since it is forbidden to do Aachman, or drinking water, during the Jitiya fast, not a single drop of water is consumed.

Jitiya Vrat regulations apply for the whole three days. On the first day, the fast is Naha Khaye, on the second day, it is Nirjala Vrat and on the third day, after waking up in Brahma Muhurta and taking bath, this fast is observed then Puja is done.
