The Ancient Lore:

According to the lore, in ancient times there was a festival taking place in Nandan forest. Dance and music was also organized in this festival, and all the Goddesses and Gods came to this festival. In the festival Malyavan and Pushyavati were dancing. Malyavan was a Gandharva singer and Pushyavati was a dancer. During the dance, they both got fascinated with each and forgot the respective norm. The festival got affected by their behavior and started to lose its sheen. By this display, Lord Indra got angered and expelled them from heaven and cursed them to reside on Earth (death world).

Under such circumstances Malyavan and Pushyavati realized their mistakes, and regretted their actions. They both wanted an exit from this death world, and then by coincidence once on Jaya Ekadashi of Magha Shukla, they both slept under a Peepal tree and they did not have food that night. They both made resolutions that they won’t commit the same mistake again and in the next morning they both were liberated from the death world.

Malyavan and Pushyavati were not aware of this fact that on that day it was Jaya Ekadashi and unintentionally they observed the fast of Jaya Ekadashi. So, with the blessings of Lord Vishnu they both got liberation from this death world. As a result, they both got blessed with more splendor and beauty and reached heaven.
