- Wake up early in the morning on the day of Purnima of Shukla Paksha in Phalguna month and resolve to fast.
- Clean the place where Holika Dahan is to be performed in the afternoon and collect dry wood, cow dung and dried branches.
- Make the idols of Holika and Prahlad with cow dung.
- One must worship Lord Narasimha on this day and offer certain items.
- Worship again in the evening and burn Holika and revolve around it three times.
- Remember Lord Narasimha and put five grains in the fire.
- Encircling the Holika with cotton thread and then, give Arghya.
- After this, put cow dung balls, barley, wheat etc. in the fire.
- Further, throw Gulaal and offer water.
- At the end, take ashes of Holika to your house and put it at the place of worship.

Why Is Holika Dahan Celebrated?
The festival of Holi is considered a symbol of victory of good over evil. On this day, people worship fire i.e. Agni and things such as grains and paddy are put in it. Also, Havan is performed with these grains and the tradition of keeping ashes of Holika in the temples has been observed. Preparations for Holika Dahan begin to take place almost a month before the festival actually falls. Holika Dahan is performed on the evening of Purnima of Phalguna month and after this, people get ready to play colourful Holi.

Holika Dahan: Legends Associated
The festival of Holi is mainly associated with Hiranyakashyap, his sister Holika and his son Prahlada. Hiranyakashyap was drowned in arrogance because of his powers and became ferocious. In this pretext, he started creating troubles for his subjects and considering himself as god. Besides this, he also started forcing his people to consider him as god. On the other hand, Holika, the sister of Hiranyakashyap, always supported her brother in his bad deeds. Then, everybody started treating Hiranyakashyap as god but his own son, Prahlada, refused to accept him as god and therefore, he got furious.
Prahlad was a supreme devotee of Lord Vishnu. In this pretext, when Hiranyakashyap asked his son to worship him, the latter denied. Then, Hiranyakashyap made many efforts to kill his son with the help of his sister but everything went in vain. After this, they played a trick to burn him. Since Holika was blessed with a boon of not being burnt in the fire, she put Prahlad in her lap and sat in the fire.
However, Prahlad kept on remembering Lord Vishnu and again, no harm could happen to him. As a result, Holika was reduced to ashes and Prahlad remained unaffected. In remembrance of this incident, the tradition of performing Holika Dahan started. This festival gives the message that god is always present to protect his devotees.

Rituals to be Performed at Home with the Ashes of Holika
