According to Shivmahapuran, Mother Parvati wanted to have Lord Shiva as her husband for many of her births. For this, in her childhood, she performed rigorous penance by facing downwards on the banks of Ganga in the Himalayan Mountains. It was during this penance that Mother Parvati had given up food and water. She used to chew on dried leaves as her only penance. Mother Parvati’s state upset her parents much. On behalf of Lord Vishnu, Devrishi Narad once approached Parvati’s father with a marriage proposal.

Upon hearing about their marriage from her father, Mother Parvati broke down in tears. His father desired that Parvati wed Lord Vishnu. In light of this, her friend suggested that Mother Parvati visit the forest. After which Mother Parvati did the same and she went to a cave and became absorbed in the penance of Lord Shiva. Mother Parvati created a sand Shivlinga and began praising Lord Shiva on the Tritiya day of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha. Following such severe penance, Mother Parvati saw Lord Shiva and was embraced as his wife.
