Mythological Significance of Mokshada Ekadashi

As per mythological beliefs, there used to be a king named Vaikhanas who ruled Gokul city in ancient times. Once, when he was in sleep, he dreamt that his father had been suffering in hell after his death and the king was praying for his betterment. The king got frightened on seeing such a terrible condition of his father.

The king called on learned people at once in his kingdom and asked the secret of his dream. The Brahmins advised him to go to Muni’s Ashram named Parvat and asked him to ask for the remedies from him for the betterment of his father.

The king did as said and reached Muni’s Ashram and narrated everything about his dream. The Muni replied that his father had been in hell because of the ill deeds of previous life. In this pretext, the king was advised to observe the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi to liberate his father from hell.

The king observed fast, worshipped with due rituals, performed donation and did all other things as advised by Muni. As a result, his father attained Moksha with the influence of fast.
