Ganesh Visarjan : Significance

In the realm of Hindu culture and religion, it is Lord Ganesha who is paid reverence to before initiating any auspicious task. Hence, he is given the status of the Lord who is worshipped first, no matter what the occasion is. Reciting the Ganesha Vandana especially during an auspicious task is considered quite important. This is so because on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, Hindus all across the nation bring Lord Ganesha to their homes with great reverence and worship him with a devoted heart and mind.

The vibrant festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, which lasts for ten long days, comes to an end with the Ganpati Visarjan. This is the particular day when the idol of Lord Ganesha is immersed in the holy waters. But how many of you know that this beautiful festival does not only have religious significance but is also symbolic of national Unity?

For the convenience of the readers let us tell you the reason behind this. Years ago, Chhatrapati Shivaji initiated the practice of organising a collective Ganesh Utsav to keep the unity of his people intact. Once again in the year 1857, Lokmanya Tilak  restarted this tradition to keep the Maratha Unity alive. It was from this very day that the tradition of celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with much pomp and show came into existence.
