Ganga Saptami Legend

There are many different mythological stories associated with the descent of Mother Ganga. According to the legend, the Ganga is said to have originated from a drop of sweat on the feet of Lord Vishnu. On the other hand, according to the second story, it is said that Ganga originated from the “’oblong water pot” of Brahma Ji. Another such belief is that when Brahma Ji washed the feet of Lord Vishnu to free the entire world from the demon Bali, and filled that water in his oblong water pot, the Ganga river then originated from there.

According to another belief, Raja Bhagirath was the one who brought the river Ganga to earth. It is said that when Kapil Muni burnt sixty thousand sons of King Sagar, then king Bhagirath did severe the penance for their salvation and then brought the river Ganga to Earth. But the flow of the Ganga river was so strong that it could have caused a catastrophe on the earth. After that King Bhagirath reached Lord Shiva and prayed to him, then Lord Shiva controlled the velocity of the river Ganga with his hair and sent it to the earth. Then the king immersed the ashes of his ancestors, from which he was saved.
