Why Is Durga Puja Celebrated?

History, Significance, And Tradition Behind It

The origins of Durga Puja can be traced through ancient Indian texts. According to mythology, Mahishasura was a powerful demon who received a boon from Lord Brahma, making him invincible to any god or human. This made him even more powerful, and he began to torment the gods in heaven. In desperation, all the gods approached Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh for help, who together created Goddess Durga and bestowed upon her their supreme powers to battle Mahishasura.

A fierce battle ensued between Mahishasura and Goddess Durga. During the fight, the demon transformed himself into a buffalo several times. This battle lasted for nearly ten days, and ultimately, Goddess Durga triumphed by beheading the buffalo and defeating Mahishasura. Thus, Durga Puja is a beautiful festival lasting ten days that commemorates this epic battle, with the final day known as Vijayadashami.

Vijayadashami is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. It also marks the return of Goddess Durga to her parental home with her children. This festival begins with Mahalaya, symbolizing the commencement of Goddess Durga’s journey to Earth. The formal festivities start on the sixth day, known as Mahashashthi when the idol of Goddess Durga is unveiled amidst the vibrant sounds of traditional drums. This worship is a significant part of Bengali tradition.

The following day is called Maha Saptami, which starts with the ritual of dipping a banana tree in water. According to this tradition, the banana tree is adorned as a bride, draped in a sari with a red border, and placed beside Lord Ganesha. Some interpret “Kola Bou” as Ganesha’s bride, while others view it as a representation of Goddess Durga herself.

Maha Ashtami is the eighth day and is considered highly significant as it celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. This day includes important rituals like offering prayers with Anjali and enjoying Khichdi during the festivities.

The next day, Maha Navami, begins after Sandhi Puja and concludes with a grand Maha Aarti, attracting a massive crowd to participate.

This beautiful and grand festival concludes on the tenth day, Dashami, when the idols of Goddess Durga and other deities are immersed in the Ganges River. This ceremony is called Durga Visarjan. Before this immersion, married women apply vermilion on each other and participate in the Sindoor Khela. The day ends with a procession, celebrating and wishing each other a joyous Vijayadashami.
