Ekadashi on the Kartik Shukla Paksha is known as Devutthana Ekadashi. It is also known by the name Prabodhini Ekadashi. It marks the end of the Chaturmas period, during which auspicious activities are not performed. The Chaturmas period is not considered to be favourable for carrying out propitious deeds. Several auspicious events such as marriages, housewarming and other tasks can be performed in this duration. Natives who perform Tulsi Vivah in their homes fast on this day and establish the idol of Lord Vishnu.

Legend of Dev Uthani Ekadashi
Ekadashi refers to the 11th date in Hindu Calendar. Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha during the month of Kartik is known as Devutthana Ekadashi. After sleeping for four months in the Kshirsagar, Lord Vishnu wakes up on this day. It is on the day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi that Lord Vishnu marries the Tulsi plant. Due to this reason, Dev Uthani is also celebrated as Tulsi Vivah. The day holds immense importance in Hinduism. It marks the beginning of the period during which auspicious activities can be performed.

On this day, the idols of Lord Vishnu are adorned with yellow colored clothes and flowers. It is believed that if one offers yellow colored flowers, position of the planet Jupiter will strengthen. A strong and benefic Jupiter helps a person to garner respect and honor in the society. Also, it leads to gain of wealth and the person enjoys peace of mind. Worshiping Lord Vishnu with unwavering devotion helps the devotee to get rid of health issues like chronic cough, digestive system problems, jaundice, pain in ears, and respiratory tract disorders.
A Mandap is made around the Tulsi plant by using sugarcanes. The Tulsi plant is adorned with a Chunri. According to religious scriptures, venerating Tulsi plant helps to strengthen the planet Mars. The fast of Devutthana Ekadashi is concluded on the next day, that is on the day of Dwadashi. The Parana is done after worshiping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Tulsi. Observers end the fast by consuming sugarcanes, Amla (Indian gooseberry) and plum (ber). It is believed that eating these fruits on Devutthana Ekadashi helps in getting rid of sins. From the scientific point of view, sugarcane is known to neutralize the harmful elements in human body. Amla or Indian Gooseberry boosts up the immunity of the body, which keeps the body fit and healthy. Plums are good for improving the digestive processes and provide relief from constipation as well.
