The festival of Devuthani Ekadashi is celebrated on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. This year, Dev Uthani Ekadashi falls on 25 November, Wednesday.

Devauthani Ekadashi is also called Hari Prabodhini Ekadashi and Devothan Ekadashi in many parts of the country.

There is a belief about this day that when Lord Vishnu sleeps for four months on the day of Ashada Shukla Ekadashi, he wakes up on this day i.e. on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi. Marriage Dates in 2020 After Devutthani Ekadashi

On this Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu awakens after his deep sleep, which is why it is also called Devotthan Ekadashi. This time, only three Muhurats are falling in the month of November after Devuthani Ekadashi while in December, there will be 5 Muhurats. However in 2021, auspicious tasks will begin from mid-April since Jupiter and Venus will remain in the state of combustion at the beginning of the year 2021. After Makar Sankranti, from January 19 to February 16, Guru Tara will remain combusted and then from February 16 to April 17, the planet Venus will remain combusted. According to astrology, marriage rites are prohibited when Venus and Jupiter remain in the state of combustion.

51 Vivah Muhurat (Panigrahan Sanskar) in 2021

During the first three months of 2021, only one auspicious Muhurta is falling on 18 January. As per planetary placements and nakshatras, Jupiter and Venus will remain in the state of combustion in the early months of the year till April 17. The star of Jupiter will remain combusted from January 19 to February 16, and after that from February 16, the star of Venus will remain in the same state. From April 19, all the parents will be engaged with their children, due to which the second Marriage Muhurta will fall on 22 April. With this, 37 Muhurats will fall before Chaturmas and after that, 13 more Muhurats will be observed till the end of the year. In total, 51 Muhurats are considered for auspicious works this year.

Significance of Devuthani Ekadashi

There is a belief about this day that during these four months, Lord Vishnu goes to sleep in the Devasayan, due to which all the auspicious tasks are not performed during this time. When the deity Lord Vishnu wakes up again, only after that any Manglik event is initiated.

It is also known as Devotthan Ekadashi because of the feeling of awakening or devotion. On this day, the importance of fasting is stated. Apart from this, it is said that a person gets salvation by worshipping properly on this day.

Rules to Follow While Fasting on Devuthani Ekadashi 

  • If possible, then fasting should be done without consuming water. Otherwise, the intake of water is allowed.
  • If a person is not well, is elderly or has a child, then he/she is advised to fast only for one time.
  • On this day, worship Lord Vishnu or your Ishta Devta.
  • Tamasic diet i.e. onion, garlic, meat, alcohol etc, should not be consumed.
  • On this day, one should chant the mantra ‘ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय नमः / oṃ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya namaḥ‘.
  • Apart from this, any person whose Moon is in a weak state or who suffers from mental problems should fast on this day only by drinking water and eating fruits, also known as Nirjala Ekadashi. They will definitely benefit from this.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi Puja Rituals

  • On this day, take a bath in the morning and take a pledge of fasting in your mind.
  • After this, with the help of sugarcane, built a pavilion. A Chowk is built in the middle of it. In its middle, you can keep an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu.
  • In this Chowk, the feet of the Lord are made, which are covered.
  • After this, offer sugarcane, water chestnuts, fruits, sweets, etc. to the Lord.
  • On this day, light a lamp of ghee, which should remain lit throughout the night.
  • Worship the feet of God by touching it at dawn to awaken the deity.
  • This is followed by a conch, bell and kirtan etc.
  • After this, the story of fasting is heard. After this, all kinds of auspicious work starts. 
  • There is such a belief about this day that whatever wish is sought by touching the feet of God is definitely fulfilled. 

Tulsi Vivah Organized On This Day

On the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, Tulsi Vivah is performed as a custom. This marriage of Tulsi tree and Shaligram is done with much fanfare just like any normal wedding. Because Tulsi is very dear to Lord Vishnu, when Lord wakes from sleep, the first prayer is heard of Harivallabha Tulsi.

Tulsi Vivah means invoking Lord Vishnu through Tulsi. It has been said in the scriptures that couples who do not have daughters, should attain the virtue of Kanyadaan by performing Tulsi Vivah once in their life.

  • On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, anoint Lord Vishnu with saffron mixed milk. It is said that any person who does this on this day will please Lord Vishnu and Lord Vishnu will fulfil every wish he asks.

  • After this, on the day of Ekadashi, the custom of offering yellow clothes, yellow fruits, flowers, yellow grains, etc. to Lord Vishnu has been told. After this, give all these things to a needy. By doing this, the grace of Lord Vishnu remains on the human being.
  • In the evening of Devuthani Ekadashi, light a lamp of ghee in front of the Tulsi plant, and circumambulate around it 11 times. Whoever does this remedy will attain peace at home.
  • On the day of Ekadashi, pour water in the conch faced to the south and consecrate to Lord Vishnu. With this remedy, you can attain the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Mahalakshmi.
  • Offer water to the Peepal tree on Ekadashi. Light a lamp under the tree in the evening. The Peepal tree is considered to be the abode of Lord Vishnu. By doing this act, you can become debt-free.
  • On this day, when you worship Lord Vishnu, keep some money near the picture or idol of God. After the Puja is completed, keep this money again in your purse or safe, as it definitely showers you with money in your life.

Mythological Legend Behind Dev Uthani Ekadashi

It is believed that only by listening to this story, a person attains mystical things and gets his/her wishes fulfilled. Once Goddess Lakshmi asked Lord Narayana, “Oh Lord, you wake up day and night and when you sleep, you sleep for millions of years. In such a situation, you destroy all the pastures, hence you should go off to sleep during a fixed time every year. This will also give me some time to rest.”

Hearing Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Narayan smiled and said, Devi, you are right. You don’t get any rest at all because of me. In such a situation, according to your saying, from now on I will sleep every year for four months during the rainy season. At that time, you and all other deities will get rest. ‘
