On the second day of Navratri, there is a tradition of worshipping Goddess Brahmacharini. The same Goddess carries a garland on her one hand and Kamandal on the other. As per the Shastras, Goddess Durga incarnated in the form of the Mountain Lord’s(Parvat Raj) daughter which means that Goddess Parvati took birth in his house. As advised by Narad Muni, she went through some tedious austerity procedures to get married to Lord Shiva, because of which she also came to be known as Tapascharini.

It was only during the second day of Navratri when the tedious process of her austerity was going on. She had spent many years without consuming a single drop of water and any grain. Mahadev was pleased with the Goddess’ austerity. So, on the second day of Navratri, this incarnation of Goddess Durga is worshipped. Also, it is considered beneficial to recite the Mantra given below so as to receive more fruitful outcomes during the reverence. Mantra:

“dadhānā karapadmābhyām, akṣamālākamaṇḍalū। devī prasīdatu mayi, brahmacāriṇyanuttamā।।”

दधाना करपद्माभ्याम्, अक्षमालाकमण्डलू। देवी प्रसीदतु मयि, ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा।।

It means that the Goddess which carries the Akshmala in one hand and Kamandal in the other should please the one who is reciting this.
