So Bhishma Ashtami is the death anniversary of Bhishma Pitamah, which falls on Shukla Paksha Ashtami of Magha month (Hindu Calendar). This is the day that Bhishma Pitamah has chosen for the departure of his soul from this materialistic world. Because according to our Hindu ancient epic Mahabharata, Bhishma, despite lying on a bed of arrows, continued in that position and waited for 58 days before leaving his body. Bhishma Pitamah left his body on the auspicious day of Uttarayana, i.e. on the day when the Lord Surya started moving towards Northward after completing the six-month period of Dakshiyana.
