King’s gardener Hem used to bring flowers daily for worship. Gardener Hem had a beautiful wife and the name was Vishalakshi. One day the gardener bought flowers from Mansarover but started joking with his wife. The king kept waiting for the gardener till noon. After some time the king ordered his servants to find the gardener. The soldiers said to the king, ‘Maharaj Mali is very sinful and aggressive. He is joking with his lady.’ Hearing this, the king ordered the gardener to be called to the palace. After hearing this, Gardener Hem started trembling with fear. King Kuber got angry and scolded the gardener and said that you’ve insulted Lord Shiva, so he will suffer separation from his wife. He will also become a leper after going to the land of death.
Due to the curse of King Kuber, Gardener Hem fell from Devlok and came to earth. His wife also disappeared and Hem suffered a lot after coming to earth. He wandered into the forest without food and water. Gardener Hem started getting very upset & strained and also had sleepless nights. But due to the effects of worshiping Lord Shiva, he remembered the mistakes he had made in his previous birth.
While roaming around, one day he reaches the Ashram of sage Markandeya. To him, the Ashram began to look like the assembly of Brahma. Gardener Hem went there and fell at the feet of the sage. Seeing it, the sage asked the reason behind the gardener’s condition. He told the sage the entire story. The sage told him about a fast and said that by observing this he would be saved. The sage said if fasting is done on Yogini Ashadh of the new Moon day of the Krishna Paksha, then all his sins will be washed. Hearing this, the gardener bowed down to the sage and started fasting according to the rules.
