Legend of Indira Ekadashi

The King of Mahishmati Pur named Indrasen was a religious minded king. Also, he was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Once, Narad came to his kingdom and the king with utmost happiness, served him and asked the reason of his visit. Devarshi Narada said that he went to Yamlok and found his father over there.Further, Narad said that due to improper observance of fast, his father had been facing tortures in Yamlok. That is why his father had sent a message for him to observe the fast of Indira Ekadashi so that the former would get in heaven. 

Then, the king asked how this fast is observed. Hearing this, Narad Muni told him that the fast of Ekadashi is observed for departed souls on Ekadashi during Ashwin month. On this day, one has to worship with pure intention for the peace of departed souls. The needy should be served with food and cows should be fed. After serving food to all the family members, silence be observed and then one can enjoy food. This grants peace to ancestors.  After this, on Ashvin Krishna Ekadashi, the fast of Ekadashi was observed with the rituals laid down by Indrasen and owing to this, the soul of the king’s father rested in peace.
