 The Guru was born to a Namboodiri Brahmin couple in a place situated in Kerala. His parents were Shiv Guru Naam Putra and Visheshta Devi. He was a great philosopher and religious mentor of the Hindu community and religion. During this year, Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti will be celebrated on Tuesday, 28 April 2020.

There are many legends prevalent about Shankaracharya. One of them states that Shiv Guru worshipped Lord Shiva very easily with utter devotion along with his wife.  Appeased by both of their gestures,  Lord Shiva blessed them with a baby boy.  The Lord also stated forth a condition that their son will turn out to be a very great philosopher but live a very short life. If he  wishes for a child to gain a very long life expectancy,  then he will not come out as a great scholar. 

 In such a situation, Shiv Guru asked for a son who led a very short life but would be a scholar at the same time.  Lord Shiva was utterly pleased by his answers which is why he himself took birth in Shiv Guru’s house in the form of Shankaracharya. On the Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha which arrives during the month of Baisakh,  Lord Shiva was born in the house of Shiv Guru and Visheshta Devi.  The small boy who was the manifestation of Adi Guru who was named Shankar and later on he came to be known as Shankaracharya.

Guru Shankaracharya Established Many Shrines in his Lifetime

It has been said that he established religious shrines in every direction be it the East, West, North, South, in four corners of the country as well as protected the religion at any cost.

First of all, Shankaracharya established Vedanta Math in South India. This shrine/Peeth is also known as the “Pratham Math”or the “Gyan Math”.

Next, he established the Govardhan Math in Jagannath Puri. 

After this, Guru Shankaracharya established the third shrine “Sharda Math” in Dwarkapuri in the west and this shrine is also called “Kalika Math”.

Lastly, he established the fourth shrine in the Northern part of India, Vadhikashram, which is also known as Jyoti Peeth Math. 

In this manner, Lord Shankaracharya kept wandering around the country and spread his preachings for the betterment of religion and humanity. Due to this, it is believed that every year, chanting, penance, worship, havan, etc. are done all over the country along with the four special shrines so as to commemorate the birth anniversary of Adi Guru Shankaracharya.
